# Isolated DC-DC Converters: Ground Separation, Safety and Noise Control

An isolated DC-DC converter separates the input and output grounds by transferring energy magnetically through a transformer, providing galvanic isolation. Isolation should be used when different grounds must be referenced, a floating or high-side rail is needed, common-mode noise or ground loops threaten measurements, or safety rules require galvanic separation. EVEVSPOWER isolated families deliver 1000V+ isolation with inputs up to 160V.

## Why Should a DC-DC Converter Be Isolated?

An isolated DC-DC converter separates the input and output grounds using magnetic transfer through a transformer. EVEVSPOWER isolated families provide 1000V+ isolation and inputs up to 160V for industrial control and instrumentation systems. Isolation is the right choice in the following situations:

- Input and output must reference different grounds.
- A floating or high-side rail is required.
- Common-mode noise couples into sensors or communication interfaces.
- Ground loops affect measurement accuracy.
- System or customer safety requirements call for galvanic separation.

## What Does Isolation Not Solve?

Isolation does not remove the need for correct creepage, clearance, working voltage and insulation category. These design requirements remain fully applicable even when a converter provides galvanic separation. A one-minute dielectric test value is not the same as continuous working voltage, so the two figures must not be confused or treated as interchangeable. To avoid misapplication, always verify the datasheet limits relevant to the installation before finalizing the design.

## Which Layout Practices Support a Reliable Isolated Design?

Good PCB layout practices are essential for an isolated converter to perform as intended. Separate primary and secondary traces, and maintain adequate spacing across the isolation barrier so the physical separation matches the electrical one. Avoid unintended capacitive coupling between the two sides, and place filtering close to the noise source. In addition, keep high-frequency loops small and route sensitive signals away from switching nodes to preserve measurement accuracy.

## How Should You Select an Isolated DC-DC Module?

Use isolated buck or isolated buck-boost modules when ground separation or noise control is required. These module types address both needs directly, making them the appropriate starting point for designs that call for galvanic separation between input and output circuits. To move from selection to implementation, review [the isolated converter family](/product-category/isolated-dc-dc/) or submit the system schematic for review by the manufacturer.
